How we learn handwriting

We are doing our handwriting.

Firstly we are learning to hold our pens and pencils correctly.

For handwriting in Room 14 we learn about the ant story.

The ant goes on lots of adventures and meets lots of things along the way.

When we learn about the ant story we learn about writing left to right and all the shapes used for forming letters and where to start writing each shape.

We can now write tall sticks, short sticks, hanging sticks, open mouths, tunnels and cups.

We will use  these shapes to form our letters -

m is a short stick, tunnel, tunnel

a is open mouth, short stick

This is a great visual way to help with our letter formation and shows us where to start  our letters and which way to go - so that they are formed the right way around.

Please ask us to tell you more about the ant story at home.

Room 14 loves to read

We are super lucky in Room 14.

When we start school, we get to choose a special picture book for turning 5.

Mr Dewar comes to the class and we choose a book and then he reads the story to us.

We think reading is really exciting.

Have a look at some of the special books we have chosen this year.

We have learnt that we can read about all sorts of things.

We have also learnt to read this poem:

The more you read
The more you know
The more you know
The more you grow!

Introducing our Class Pets

In Room 14 we have a few class pets.

They help us to learn how to care for and look after things.

We are very careful with our class pets.

We have tadpoles, frogs, caterpillars and butterflies.

It has been exciting to watch these pets grow and change over the past few weeks.

Our favourite class pet is 'Nibbles' the guinea pig.
We love having cuddles with her and helping to clean out her cage.
We are always kind and gentle to Nibbles.

We are really good at caring for Nibbles and caring for each other in Room 14.

Working with our big buddies

In Room 14 we are really lucky that some of our Year 7/8 students come and work with us.

The buddies helped us to make boats by reading our book and following the instructions.

We told the buddies what to do and we worked together to make our boats.

Look at our finished boats.
We are really proud of them!

Thanks buddies - it was great working with you.

Our maths this week

This week for maths we were learning how to count and order numbers to 10.

On Tuesday we had a tricky activity where we had to order the numbers and then count the matching groups.

We then had to write our numerals as well.

On Thursday we did the same thing but we counted backwards!

There were a lot of steps to follow and we all got this activity finished.

We then did a self evaluation and most of us found the activity easy.

Robyn thinks we are maths SUPER STARS!!!

We are also really good at working together and helping each other in Room 14.
What works - Team Work!

Please help us with our forwards and backwards counting at home.
We will be trying to find lots of things to count.
