ROCKET RACERS!!!

This week as part of our Discovery Time we made Rocket racers.

We started by doing our phonics lesson on the 'r' sound and read a rocket poem.

Then we looked at some youtube clips about rockets and what makes them go.

After that we made our own Rocket Racers with straws and our breath to power them.

We had races and had to do some problem solving because sometimes our rockets didn't go very well.
We also had fun measuring which rocket had flown the longest distance.

We decided that next time we would make them with cardboard instead of paper because it is stronger.

We also worked out that if we put a paper clip on the end that gave it more weight and it would fly further.

We also found out that if we used our racers too much then they got a bit wet with spit.  So we had to use cellotape to seal up where they had been wet.

There was a lot of learning going on.

Have a look at us experimenting with our Rocket Racers!!

GET WISE!!!

This week we had a visit to Room 14 from
'Captain Cashtastic' from ASB bank.
This was part of the Get Wise financial literacy programme.

He taught us all about money and how to use our money wisely.

We discussed things we need to buy and things we want to buy.

We also looked at NZ notes and coins and ordered them from the smallest amount to the biggest amount.

We all enjoyed his visit and are will try to be wise with our money.

AFL

This term for PE we are doing swimming and AFL.

Today the AFL teachers came in for our first lesson.

We played some warm up games and then we learnt to do a 'drop punt'.

We had to make sure we were holding the ball correctly
- laces away from faces
- hands on the lines
x goes up and down

Then we had lots of fun trialling our drop punts with our partners.

Have a look at some of us in action.

The day our school flooded

On Thursday our school and class got flooded.
It all happened so quickly and I was so proud of all the children.
It was actually a bit of an adventure watching the flooding and being evacuated from school.

Unfortunately we have lost a lot of our classroom furniture and resources and our whole block needs to be remodelled.

We will be moving into the music room for the next couple of months.

It will be exciting to set up in our new space and have some more exciting adventures together.

Thanks to everyone for all your support and kindness.

BLAST OFF Maths!

For maths today we continued with our space theme.

Firstly, we watched some space shuttle and rockets counting down to launch on youtube.

We then pretended to be rockets and counted ourselves down to BLAST OFF!!!

Our next job was to write and order our numerals counting backwards from 10 or 20.

After that we made some rockets using shapes.

Robyn was so impressed with how creative we were and how all our rockets look different.

Here are some of our finished Blast Off Rockets.

Don't they look 'out of this world'.
